Vocabulary
1. ambassador (n.) : the highest-ranking person who represents his or her own government while living in another country
ex. Embassy officials met with the ambassador.
2. assume (v.) : to think that something is true or probably true without knowing that it is true
ex. I assumed he was coming, so I was surprised when he didn't show up.
3. custody (n.) law : the legal right to take care of a child (such as a child whose parents are divorced)
ex. She has sole custody of her daughter.
4. dictator (n.) : a person who rules a country with total authority and often in a cruel or brutal way
ex. The country was ruled by a military dictator.
5. deputy (n.) : an important assistant who helps the person who the leader of a government, organization, etc.
ex. <the club president sent a deputy to the conference to vote on our behalf>
6. testimony (n.) : something that someone says especially in a court of law while formally promising to tell the truth
ex. The jury heard 10 days of testimony.
7. summit (n.) : the highest point of a mountain : the top of a mountain
ex. The mountain range has summits over 10,000 feet high.
8. stronghold (n.) : an area where most people have the same beliefs, values, etc. : an area dominated by a particular group
ex. The area is a Republican stronghold.
9. speculation (n.) : ideas or guesses about something that is not known
ex. He dismissed their theories as mere speculation.
10. regime (n.) : a form of government : a particular government
ex. The new regime is sure to fall.
11. provocation (n.) : an action or occurrence that causes someone to become angry or to begin to do something
ex. He can turn violent at the least provocation.
12. restriction (n.) : a law or rule that limits or controls something
ex. Building in that area came with some restrictions.
13. propaganda (n.) : ideas or statements that are often false or exaggerated and that are spread in order to help a cause, a political leader, a government, etc.
ex. He was accused of spreading propaganda.
14. customize (v.) : to change (something) in order to fit the needs or requirements of a person, business, etc.
ex. The telephone company has offered to customize a plan for our business.
15. deficit (n.) : an amount (such as an amount of money) that is less than the amount that is needed
ex. The government is facing a deficit of $3 billion.
16. dividend (n.) finance : an amount of a company's profits that the company pays to people who own stock in the company
ex. Profits are distributed to shareholders as dividends.
17. entrepreneur (n.) : a person who starts a business and is willing to risk loss in order to make money
18. flock (n.) : a group of animals (as birds or sheep) assembled or herded together
19. facility (n.) : something (such as a building or large piece of equipment) that is built for a specific purpose
ex. The facilities are at the end of the corridor.
20. franchise (n.) : the right to sell a company's goods or services in a particular area; also : a business that is given such a right
ex. She was granted an exclusive franchise in the city's west end.
21. gimmick (n.) : a method or trick that is used to get people's attention or to sell something
ex. The proposal to cut taxes was just an election gimmick to win votes.
22. iconic (n.) computers : a small picture on a computer screen that represents a program or function
ex. Click on the icon to open your e-mail program.
23. incentive (n.) : something that encourages a person to do something or to work harder
ex. The rising cost of electricity provides a strong incentive to conserve energy.
24. indicator (n.) : a sign that shows the condition or existence of something
ex. Economic indicators suggest that prices will go up.
25. inject (v.) : to force a liquid medicine or drug into someone or something by using a special needle
ex. She told a few jokes to inject a little humor into her speech.
